Paternus: Wrath of Gods by Dyrk Ashton
She puts away the needle-point she’s been working, takes the pot and shakes it. The muffled buzzing chirp of crickets comes from inside. “My one weakness, these.”
“Hush.” She opens the lid and the chirruping stops. She grabs one out and goes to pop it in her mouth, but it kicks off her lip to the floor, making a bid for life. “Oh!” she exclaims, and bats at it like a cat, then snatches it up and tosses it in her mouth.
Sitting next to her, Peter reaches in and takes one as well. The sound of them crunching almost makes Fi retch.
“Tastes like almonds,” says Peter.
“I’ve always thought almonds tasted like crickets.”
You will need:
- Cocktail Shaker or Glass & Strainer
- Martini Glass
- Bar Spoon
- 2 oz Bourbon
- 1.5 oz Amaretto
- 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
- 4 Dashes Black Walnut Bitters
- Maraschino Cherry/Orange Peel for Garnish (optional)
If you have a maraschino cherry for garnish, add it to the bottom of your glass and set aside. Add ice to your shaker, then add measures of bourbon, amaretto, vermouth and bitters. Stir with your bar spoon until thoroughly chilled, and then strain into your martini glass.
If you have a slice of orange peel for garnish, rub the inside of it around the rim of the glass and then twist the peel above the drink to add a fine mist of orange oil. Drop the peel into the finished drink.
Enjoy! Tastes like crickets, apparently.
