The Pairing

The Lost Temple of Ssis’sythyss by Jeffery Russell

The Reasoning

One of the possible side effects of pulling flavors and themes from a novel for inspiration is that once in a while an author will fixate on something their characters don’t like. In this case, it’s papaya. There are a slew of anti-papaya jokes in The Lost Temple of Ssis’sythyss, and if Russell truly dislikes them… well, I’m sorry, but you did talk about them an awful lot. 😀

The Recipe

You will need:

  • Tumbler
  • Small Bowl
  • Saucer
  • Zester or fine grater
  • Ice
  • 1 tbsp Flaky Salt (rec: Kosher or Maldon – do not use table salt for the love of god, Kay. ಠ_ಠ)
  • 3/4 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 Lime (zest of half the lime, wedge for rimming glass and 1 oz juice)
  • 2 oz Tequila (Non-Alcoholic Substitute: Omit this ingredient)
  • 1 oz Triple Sec (Non-Alcoholic Substitute: 2 oz Orange Juice)
  • Papaya Nectar
  • 3 Dashes Hot Sauce

In a small bowl, mix salt, chili powder and lime zest. Pour onto a saucer. Take your lime wedge and run it around about a third of the rim of your tumbler. Rim this part of the glass with your chili-lime salt mix, then fill with ice.

Measure Tequila, Triple Sec and lime juice into the glass, then add three dashes of hot sauce of your choice. Top up with papaya nectar, stir and serve. Possibly while giving it the side-eye.

Enjoy (or not).
